I-79 traffic delayed by car fire
JACKSON TWP — A vehicle fire Tuesday afternoon caused traffic delays on Interstate 79.
The car, a Toyota Camry, caught fire under the hood around 3:45 p.m. between mile markers 87 and 88 northbound near the Little Creek Road exit.
The unidentified female driver heard a “pop” noise before pulling the Camry over to the shoulder of the interstate and exiting, Harmony Fire District captain Josh Rader said.
Rader said witnesses saw sparks come from the car and attempted to put out the fire with personal extinguishers, but to no avail. The front half of the Camry was a smoldering mess by the time the fire was put out.
“It is a total loss,” Rader said of the car. “These (fires) are not extremely rare.”
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
“For fires likes these, it could be anything from engine failure to electrical failure,” Rader said.
The driver of the Camry was not injured. She was driving alone at the time of the fire.
One lane of the interstate was closed just before the Little Creek Road exit, causing slight traffic delays.
Emergency personnel were cleared shortly before 5 p.m.
Jackson Township police also assisted at the scene with traffic control.
