Zelienople seeks $1.5M state grant
ZELIENOPLE — More money is being sought for the borough’s revitalization project.
Borough council voted to apply for a $1.5 million state grant for phase two of the project, which deals with improving Main Street.
“We thought it wise to bring it to council’s attention tonight because June is the application deadline.
Council will not meet on May 30 because of Memorial Day.
Potential improvements include new street lights, new concrete for the sidewalks, “bump outs” to help absorb rainwater and exposed aggregate finish for the intersections.
Main Street would be improved between its intersections with Spring and Beaver streets.
Other improvements being considered include crosswalk safety improvements, traffic signals, new driveway aprons, bicycle parking and new curb ramps that comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
The borough applied for the same grant last year with a different value, but did not receive it for the project’s first phase with the municipal parking lot.
Pepe said the revised design for Main Street’s improvements may be presented to council in June.
Representatives from the Herbert, Rowland & Grubic design firm presented the phase’s initial design to council in March.
The design is being presented to the state Department of Transportation for its recommendation.
“It depends on how PennDOT reacts,” Pepe said of the design’s final approval.
