Plan altered for Moraine
WORTH TWP — The project to upgrade the entrance to the North Shore of Moraine State Park hasn’t had any major changes since officials presented plans last March, project engineers said.
But the project now does include about 170 feet of new turning lane on Route 422 west for drivers turning left onto Interstate 79.
Plans for the project were outlined Tuesday night at a meeting sponsored by state officials at the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources regional office.
The change to the plans, which call for adding ramps in both directions from Route 422 to West Park Road, came in response to public comment from last March’s meeting regarding the proposal, said engineers from HRG, the firm developing the project for the state Department of Transportation.
The plans call for removing the westbound ramp off Route 422 and replacing it with new ramps at West Park. The work will move the access ramps closer to I-79, eliminating what is now a series of roads that make access to the park’s North Shore more difficult for travelers.
The North Shore has some of Moraine’s major attractions such as boat tours, a gift shop and the marina.
Work to build the ramps, widen and improve a portion of Route 422, and add a traffic light at the Route 422 ramp to I-79 southbound — estimated to cost as much as $5 million — is expected to begin in the spring of next year. Final paving work on some of the road construction could stretch into 2018, engineers said, depending on weather conditions.
The 16,521-acre park draws nearly 1.5 million visitors a year, according to the DCNR.
