Gymnastics coach charged with assault

Man allegedly had sex with student

BUTLER TWP — A Sarver man and gymnastics coach has been charged with multiple felonies amid allegations that he engaged in illicit touching and sexual contact with a student.

Keith R. Callen, 45, of 117 Sarver Road was charged with sexual assault by a sports official, volunteer or employee of nonprofit or not-for-profit organization, aggravated indecent assault, unlawful contact with a minor, corruption of minors and indecent assault. The charges were filed April 26 in an Allegheny County district court by state police in Butler.

The charges come amid allegations by a student that Callen improperly touched her on numerous occasions and had sex with her twice.

The student, identified in court documents as “Victim 1” told investigators that Callen began coaching her when she was 12 years old, at Jewart’s Gymnastics in Hampton Township, Allegheny County.

She began taking private lessons with Callen in the winter of 2010, according to court documents. Two years later, in February of 2012, Callen allegedly gave the student a diamond heart necklace and told her that if she were his age, he would “ask her out.”

The student told investigators that her mother found the necklace and gave it back to Callen, telling him that the gift was inappropriate.

A month later, Callen left Jewart’s, but he began coaching Victim 1 again in May 2012, when the student began taking lessons at Trinity Gymnastics in West Deer Township, Allegheny County, where Callen became a coach.

The student, who was 14 years old at the time, said Callen began touching her sexually in July 2013, during training sessions at the gym.

Later that year Callen and the victim began training at Elite Athletic Center in Butler Township, where the molestation continued and Callen again gave the student a gift of jewelry — an infinity ring inscribed with the message “forever love.”

The improper sexual contact eventually escalated to intercourse, the student told investigators.

In March 2014, Callen allegedly had sex with the student, then 16 years old, in the back of his Jeep while at a gas station on Route 228 in Adams Township.

The victim told investigators that Callen also sexually touched and had sex with her in the parking lot of Home Depot in Butler Township, where Callen suggested they meet so that he could help her rehab an injured knee.

According to online court records, Callen will appear before district Judge Tom Swan on June 8 for a preliminary hearing.
