Richard E. Schnur
Richard E. Schnur, 83, of Butler passed away Wednesday at his residence.
He was born June 8, 1932, to Paul and Loretto Catherine (Liebler) Schnur, in Rock Island, Ill.
He attended St. Peter's School and Butler Junior and Senior High School and graduated in the Class of 1950.
He served 2 years in the United States Army during the Korean War and was discharged with the rank of sergeant.
He received a BBA degree from the University of Pittsburgh with a major in accounting.
He was employed at Bendix Corporation in Teterboro, N.J., for three years until accepting employment with H.J. Heinz Co. This employment took him to all their locations throughout the entire United States.
He returned to Butler to become comptroller at Penn Champ, Inc. in East Butler.
In 1991 he became co-owner and operator of Apple Alley B&B in Emlenton, Pa. This was the former Heasley-Sutton home on River Avenue.
While in Emlenton, he was on the board of directors of the Chamber of Commerce, serving two terms as president.
He wrote many articles for the local newspapers on happenings in the town and the B&B.
He also maintained an accounting and income tax service for more than 40 years.
He worked on and helped to write and produce seven books on family histories for himself and his partner, Terrence Johnson-Cooney.
Together they wrote a mini novel called “Death Farm” based on a true story of murders in Clarion County in 1910 and 1940. They recently completed a children's book, “If I Were A Cow.”
Mr. Schnur wrote and published “Men of Summer Return,” the history of Pullman Park and “Beyond the Swinging Bridge,” Island Memories.
He was a lifelong member of St. Peter Roman Catholic Church. He enjoyed baking Christmas cookies and candy for his family and friends.
He is survived by his partner, Terrence Johnson-Cooney of Butler; a sister, Jean M. Sloan of Longmont, Colo.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a brother, John and his wife, Patricia Schnur; two sisters, Nancy and her husband William Daye and Donna and her husband David Sarver; and a brother-in-law, Robert Sloan.
SCHNUR — Friends of Richard E. Schnur, who died on Wednesday, Aug. 26, 2015, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 10 a.m. at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 127 Franklin St. Butler.Interment will follow at St. Peter Cemetery.Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society, 320 Bilmar Drive, Pittsburgh, PA 15205, or to Geibel Funeral Home to help with expenses.
