Paul Francis McCabe

Paul Francis McCabe, 92, passed away Sept. 6 in Sun City, Ariz., surrounded by family and close friends.

He leaves his wife of 68 years, Patti Jean (Shea) McCabe; his son, Paul Christopher and his wife, Tat Yakutis, McCabe of Culver City, Calif.; his son, Patrick McCabe and his wife, Kathryn, of California; his brother, John Austin McCabe of Butler; two granddaughters; several step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren; four nieces, Maureen McCabe Myers of Pennington, N.J., Anne Marie Donohue of North Bethesda, Md., Monica McCabe of Butler and Michele McCabe of Butler; four grandnephews; and one grandniece; and many close friends in his loving community of Cameo Palms in Sun City, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Marian Donohue of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Born and raised in Butler, he was the son of Paul R. and Agatha C. (Cramer) McCabe. He attended St. Paul's Roman Catholic School in Butler, now Butler Catholic, and graduated from Butler High School, Class of 1942. He attended Slippery Rock College before going to flight school in Pensacola to become a U.S. Navy pilot.

After his stateside World War II active duty, he attended the Northrop Institute of Technology in Los Angeles, Calif., for degrees in aeronautics and mechanical engineering. From there, he became a corporate pilot and worked for several large corporations including Goodyear and Mobil. Later in his career, he worked for Garrett Corp/Air Research as a contracts administrator, customizing corporate jet aircraft.

During his corporate career, he was also active in the U.S. Navy Reserves, flying Lockheed P2Vs off the Pacific coast where he tracked Russian submarines. After retiring to Gardnerville, Nev., he flew with the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) until he was nearly 80 years old.

He met his wife, Patricia Jean Shea, in Pensacola, Fla., during naval training. They married in 1947 and spent many years living in Los Angeles, Calif., before retiring to Nevada and later to Sun City, Ariz. He enjoyed traveling with his wife, the companionship of his dogs and playing golf.

MCCABE — Family and friends of Paul Francis McCabe, who died Sunday, Sept. 6, 2015, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Geibel Funeral Home, 201 E. Cunningham St., Butler.A graveside service with military honors will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Cemetery in Butler.
