City council looks at selling former pool
Butler is looking into the possibility of selling its former swimming pool at Memorial Park.
Councilman Bill May said at the city’s meeting Thursday night the city has little options left with the abandoned pool.
“Something has to be done there,” May said.
The pool at the end of Miller Avenue has been vacant for more than a decade, May said.
It would cost the city more than $30,000 to fill the pool in, while building a new attraction there would likely cost hundreds of thousands of dollars.
Council authorized city solicitor Jim Coulter to research the deed of the property to determine if there is anything in the title that would limit the marketability of the pool.
May said land is sometimes donated to municipalities on the condition it remains for public use. However, May said he believes the city purchased the property years ago.
Council would like to see the land stay open for recreational use.
May said he explored the possibility of turning the land into a dek hockey rink, which would cost about $100,000.
“That would still be my first hope,” he said.
However, the city likely wouldn’t have the funds to build the rink, so it would be left up to a private developer.
May said the pool also could be removed and kept as green space, or sold for development of town houses.
“We’re still in the early stages of this,” he said. “There are different ideas.”
A group of city residents had been hopeful to raise funds to convert the pool into a spray park, but a feasibility study finished last year found it would cost more than $800,000 to complete.
It’s not the first plot the city is looking to possibly sell for private development.
The city is already trying to gather land rights to an abandoned playground on Zeigler Avenue.
May said the city is working to get the deed to a former playground previously managed by Franklin Glass Athletic Association board.
“That has been defunct for decades,” May said of the board.
That property has been left vacant for a number of years, and the playground has since been replaced by the nearby Father Marinaro Park.
May said the city hopes to get control of the land to sell it for possible townhouse development.
