Fugitive caught at apartment
A fugitive on the run from federal marshals and Butler Township police is finally behind bars after his arrest late Sunday night at a suspected drug house in Butler.
But Matthew G. Hamersley, 31, who has no known address, was not about to be captured easily. City and township officers, aided by a K-9 officer, had to forcibly remove the suspect, who was found hiding in a bathroom.
Two Butler officers suffered minor injuries in the altercation with the defendant at the apartment in the 400 block of North Washington Street.
Police arrested three others, including a mother and son, who also were at the apartment that was being used to sell drugs, investigators said.
The U.S. Marshals Service were looking for Hamersley for a parole violation and township police wanted him in connection with a suspected drunken driving crash earlier this month that left one of his passengers critically injured.
A police informant recently alerted authorities that Hamersley was at the North Washington Street apartment that is just diagonal from the Emily Brittain School.
The informant claimed the fugitive and others at the home were selling heroin there, police said.
Investigators over the weekend conducted a controlled buy at the home and purchased suspected heroin from Hamersley and 26-year-old Brandon S. Smith, who lives there with his mother.
Police subsequently obtained a search warrant for the small, 15-foot-by-15-foot apartment.
Officers had to force in the door to get inside. They immediately found Smith, his mother 44-year-old Betty Lou Smith and Mannon L. Rose, 26, who has no known address.
Police searched and found Hamersley hiding in the bathroom, lying on the floor. He would not come out or show his hands to officers, according to court documents.
The suspect was eventually arrested with the help of a city K-9 officer but not before getting into a brief altercation with officers.
Patrolmen Anthony Fatta and David Villotti suffered minor injuries.
Sgt. Ben Spangler, the lead officer, said police retrieved 10 stamp bags of suspected heroin that were on the bathroom floor next to Hamersley.
They found another 10 bags of suspected heroin as part of a drug kit containing syringes and spoon. Additionally, Spangler said, they seized a crack cocaine pipe, marijuana pipe, four cell phones, and a drug owe sheet that was in Betty Smith’s purse.
All four defendants were placed in the Butler County Prison to await arraignment on felony and misdemeanor drug charges.
Hamersley also is jailed on the federal parole violation. That case stems from the defendant’s conviction in U.S. District Court for stealing more than 100 pistols, revolvers and rifles during a burglary at the McCrea Gun Shop in Clearfield Township in 2007.
Butler Township police on March 16 obtained a felony warrant for Hamersley in connection with a March 8 one-car crash on Mercer Road.
Hamersley’s front seat passenger, Keith Reges, 27, of Butler, suffered several serious injuries, including bleeding on his brain and multiple facial and pelvic fractures, according to court documents.
Reges was last reported in critical condition at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, authorities said.
Police said Hamersley and two other passengers fled the scene after the car slammed into a utility pole. Investigators believe the defendant was drunk when he crashed.
Hamersley faces numerous charges including aggravated assault by vehicle while driving under the influence, aggravated assault by vehicle and accidents resulting in injury, all felonies.
