Butler Township man charged with theft

He allegedly stole motorized cart

BUTLER TWP — Nearly a week after a suspected drunken driver was stopped at a very slow speed on a stolen motorized shopping cart, police Wednesday filed their case.

Joshua Anthony, 22, of Butler Township is charged with misdemeanor counts of theft and receiving stolen property, and a summary charge of public drunkenness.

Police allege Anthony was at the Walmart in Butler Commons about 4:50 a.m. Jan. 26 when he took off with the electric cart designed for the handicapped.

He puttered down New Castle Road for about a half-mile before police got the call and stopped him on the cart near Greenwood Drive.

Anthony, who lives on New Castle Road, was about a half-mile from home. That’s where police believe he was headed.

Officers asked Anthony what he was doing.

He immediately acknowledged he stole the cart from Walmart, and he was drunk, according to court documents.

Police confirmed that the suspect was “visibly intoxicated,” and reeked of alcohol.

“While in custody,” a police affidavit said, “Anthony made statement after statement about being drunk, being stupid, being an (expletive), and about stealing the cart.”

Police later checked with Walmart authorities and learned that the cart is valued at $1,008. The cart was undamaged.

A preliminary hearing for Anthony was not immediately set.
