Karl-Heinz Frohne
Karl-Heinz Frohne, 72, of Slippery Rock died at 8:30 p.m. Friday at his home.
Born in Stettin, Germany, May 24, 1939, he was the son of Otto Frohne and Hilda Heinichen Frohne.
He married Barbara Gadsby Taylor on Dec. 20, 2000. She survives at their home.
He previously was married to Janet Larmi Frohne, who he married in 1961 and who preceded him in death in 1992.
Mr. Frohne graduated from the University of Pittsburgh in 1962 and received his master's in petroleum engineering from West Virginia University.
He began working for Texaco as an engineer on an off-shore oil rig in Louisiana. He later worked for 36 years for the U.S. Department of Energy in Morgantown, W.Va., doing gas and oil research. He concluded his career at the Department of Environmental Protection in Morgantown working with hazardous waste clean up. He retired in December 2000.
He enjoyed designing, installing and learning about landscaping and music, travel, painting with water colors, woodworking and birdwatching.
He and his wife, Barbara, were active participants in the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Slippery Rock University.
Surviving are his wife, Barbara G. Frohne; two daughters, Lisa Lott of Asheville, N.C., and Karen (Guy) Read of Durham, N.C.; a granddaughter: JiaMei Read; two brothers, Bernhard (Linda) Frohne of Edinboro and Herbert Frohne of Irwin; a stepdaughter, Machelle (Scott) Smith of Oil City; and a stepson, James (Angela) Taylor of State College. Also surviving are 11 step-grandchildren.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, he was preceded in death by a stepdaughter, Crystal Hutchings.
<B>FROHNE </B>— There will be no public visitation, viewing or formal public ceremonies for Karl-Heinz Frohne, who died Friday, July 15, 2011. The family will hold private services later.Memorial contributions may be given to a charity of choice.Arrangements are by <B>Smith Funeral Home</B>, Slippery Rock.
