Driver waives to lesser charges
EVANS CITY — A 62-year-old woman charged with stalking and harassing the woman who called police on her had those charges dropped Wednesday by District Judge Wayne Seibel.
But Joan M. Solari of Lyndora waived to court charges of disorderly conduct and careless driving. She was originally charged with harassment, stalking, attempting to elude an officer and careless driving. Her next court date will be Jan. 19 in Butler.
Assistant District Attorney Russ Karl said the most serious charges were dropped because of Solari's age and lack of a prior criminal record. He also said she will be forced to attend anger management sessions.
The charges stem from an incident Sept. 24 when Janice Ponteous called Adams Township police to report Solari's aggressive driving on Myoma Road. According to police documents, Ponteous said Solari flew past her in a no passing zone and was speeding and running red traffic lights.
Ponteous said she followed Solari into Seven Fields while getting the car's registration, which she gave to police. Ponteous also alluded to previous aggressive driving incidents where Solari constantly blew her car horn at people stopped for school buses.
Later that day, police said Ponteous called them and said Solari was driving around the parking lot at Ponteous' place of employment at 300 Seven Fields Boulevard. She was afraid Solari would vandalize her car as a result of prior complaints Ponteous filed with police.
Solari knew which car was Ponteous' because she has a personalized license plate.
Police arrived, but Solari had already left.
However, on Oct. 12, a township police officer saw Solari speeding on Myoma Road. The officer eventually pulled over Solari on Seven Fields Boulevard. Once the officer told Solari he had received several prior complaints about her driving, she became "enraged" and drove away quickly after being issued a speeding ticket.
The next day, Ponteous called police and said Solari had driven around the parking lot of her employer about noon and also before 5 p.m. the previous day. She told police she feared Solari was stalking her and asked police to be present when she got off work at 5 p.m.
About 4:30 p.m. Oct. 13, a township police officer observed Solari's car cruising through the parking lot. He pulled the car over, and Solari screamed at him as he approached the car.
The officer asked Solari what business she had at Ponteous' place of employment, and Solari said it was a public building. According to police, Solari then yelled "when you're going to follow people, make sure you don't have a personalized license plate," referring to Ponteous.
The police officer told Solari the parking lot has a no trespassing sign and again asked what business she had there. According to police, she drove away from the scene quickly, just missing the officer.
She was stopped several miles later on Route 228 after a vehicle blocked her path during the chase, and then several police cars eventually boxed her in. Police were forced to break a window after Solari locked the doors and refused to come out.
