Nelson L. McKissick
Nelson L. "Sonny" McKissick, 75, of Butler died Monday evening in the emergency room of Butler Memorial Hospital.
Born March 9, 1934, in Butler, he was a son of the late Nelson A. and Stella (Setnar) McKissick.
He had worked as a butcher for the Butler Packing Co. for 11 years, and he also worked at St. Fidelis College for 20 years until his retirement. In the early 1970s, he was a police officer for the Summit Township Police Department. Currently, he worked for the past 10 years for the Hey Electric Co. in Butler as a truck driver and delivery person.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Roman Catholic Church in Herman, was a life member of the Herman Volunteer Fire Department, was on the board of directors for the Summit Township Sportsman Club for 35 years and was its president for the past five years.
Sonny had enjoyed spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and fishing, hunting and camping. He had harvested buck with his rifle, crossbow and muzzleloader and taught archery lessons to students at the St. Mary School in Herman.
He was a member of the Pennsylvania National Guard, where he received the highest marksmanship scores and received trophies from an Army general.
Surviving are his wife, Gladys L. (Stutz) McKissick, whom he married July 2, 1955; three daughters, Mrs. Terri (John) Malinski, Mrs. Brenda (Joseph) Geibel and Mrs. Sheila (Thomas) Graham, all of Butler; six grandchildren, Joe (Amanda) Geibel of Florida, Ronald Geibel of Knoxville, Tenn., Nelson Gold, Timothy (Kara) Gold, Maylee Graham, and Olivia Graham, all of Butler; a great-granddaughter, Annaleigh Gold of Butler; four sisters, Mrs. Mary Ann (Leo) Geagan of Butler, Mrs. Dorothy (Thomas) Nail of Portersville, Treada Braun of Bridgewater and Mrs. Linda (Glenn) Pugh of Butler; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and Ralph McKissick. A sister, Wanda Anthony, died Tuesday, April 28, 2009.
<B>McKissick </B> Friends of Nelson L. "Sonny" McKissick, who died Monday, April 27, 2009, will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the <B>Geibel Funeral Home</B>, 201 E. Cunningham St. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. Ward Stakem, O.F.M., Cap., pastor, will officiate.
