James Franklin Ryan

James Franklin Ryan, 92, of Karns City, formerly of Plain Grove near Volant, passed away suddenly of natural causes at 8:56 p.m. Monday at the home of his daughter and son-in-law.

He was born June 5, 1916, in Minneapolis, Minn., a son of the late Charles Patrick Ryan and Iona Stanley Ryan.

He was a member of the Church of God in Karns City.

He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps as a young man and served at Camp 77, near North Bend in Clinton County.

He was a member of the AARP.

He retired in 1981 from Pullman Standard as a machinist, where he worked for 23 years. He also had been employed at International Staple in East Butler for eight years.

He married the former Katherine Murray Grindel on Aug. 24, 1935, in Pittsburgh, and she preceded him in death Dec. 2, 1990.

Surviving are his children, Iona Ruth Rebic and her husband, Joseph, of Waltsport, Ore., Patricia Crivella Sinicki and her husband, Robert, of Allison Park, Melvin Ralph Ryan of Erie, Beatrice Kathleen Nelson of Zephyrhills, Fla., Dolores Kifer and her husband, James, of Wadesboro, N.C., Carolina Alma Kelley and her husband, the Rev. Thomas, of Karns City, and Caroline Grossman of Grove City. Along with his family of 10 children, he also is survived by Kathy Pranulis and her husband, Charles, of Butler and Kenneth Ryan of Zephyrhills, Fla. Also surviving are 39 grandchildren, 110 great-grandchildren, many great-great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death along with his parents and wife were a son, James Ryan, on Dec. 14, 1980; two daughters, Frances Best on Nov. 29, 2001, and Shirley Ann Smith on Aug. 8, 2008; a brother, Ralph Melvin Ryan, in 1989; and a sister, Ruth Fox, in 1981.

<B>RYAN</B> — Friends of James Franklin Ryan, who died Monday, Feb. 2, 2009, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the <B>Richard D. Hillis Funeral Home</B>, Petrolia. Visitation also will be held from noon until the funeral services at 1 p.m. Friday at the Petrolia Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Elliot Leighty, pastor of the Uniontown Church of God, and the Rev. James Smith, regional overseer of the Church of God, co-officiating. Interment immediately will follow at Prairie Cemetery, Harrisville.
