Knoch, Mars ousted in soccer playoffs

It was a tough Saturday for two local WPIAL girls soccer teams.

Knoch and North Allegheny were locked in a 1-1 tie in the second half before sophomore forward Kylie Fuller and senior midfielder Jourdan Spence scored in the second half to give the Tigers a 3-1 Class AAA playoff victory.

Fuller's goal came nine minutes into the second half. Spence's goal, off an assist by Larissa Steeb, came 17 minutes later and all but secured the win.

NA scored first on a goal by Dawn Murphy eight minutes into the match.

Murphy left later in the game with an injury.

Knoch senior Amanda Sharbaugh had an early chance to put the Knights ahead, but her shot from 15 yards away was blocked by NA defender Kelsey Donegan to end the threat.

Sharbaugh did score with 12 minutes remaining in the first half to knot the match at 1-1.

North Allegheny will play Mt. Lebanon at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The Mars girls were blanked 1-0 by Moon in the first round of the Class AAA playoffs.

Karns City 1, Bradford 0 — Michelle Sweeney scored a goal off an assist by Kayce Grimm 10 minutes into the second half to lead the Gremlins.Alaina Burns got the shutout in goal, stopping 10 shots for Karns City (15-4-1).The Gremlins will host Kane at 5 p.m. Thursday in the first round of the District 9 playoffs.

Slippery Rock had five runners place in the top 15 as the boys cross country team captured the Region 2 race Saturday.Owen Bowser placed fourth for the Rockets with a time of 18 minutes, 1 second.
