Singer

Ruth A. Singer, 91, of Meridian died peacefully Monday at her home.

She was born in Pittsburgh on July 9, 1915, the daughter of the late Anthony and Rosina Kaule Schwarzmeier.

She married Lawrence E. Singer on Jan. 11, 1933. They moved to the Butler area in 1937, finally settling in Meridian where they helped start and build St. Conrad Roman Catholic Church.

Mrs. Singer graduated from St. Boniface High School in Pittsburgh and worked for several years as a hostess in the Roosevelt Hotel dining room.

In addition to raising her children and managing the household, canning most of the family food and maintaining vegetable and flower gardens, and baking and cooking, she worked outside of the home from time to time. From 1943 until the end of World War II, she worked at the Pullman Shell Shop in Butler producing howitzer shells for the Allied forces. During the late 1950s, she worked for several years at Magnetics in East Butler.

She was active in her community with memberships in the Christian Mothers at St. Fidelis Parish where she was a charter member, the Buttercup Garden Club, the Penn State Extension group of Meridian, and the Meridian Booster Club. She served as president of all these organizations as well as serving as a den mother for the Cub Scouts for over 10 years.

Ruth was an avid gardener and loved the outdoors. After World War II, she helped her husband and his brother build a small hunting camp in Jefferson County and she spent many weeks and weekends there with her family during the next 40 years until the death of her husband. In her later years, she traveled to Germany and throughout the United States visiting her children and grandchildren. She was also a staunch Steelers and Pirates fan and enjoyed reading and watching television.

Ruth was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Lawrence, on March 13, 1990. Also preceding her were two sons, David W. and Richard; two grandsons, Michael and Jorgen; two brothers, Regis and Harold Schwarzmeier; and a sister, Lillian Parr.

Surviving are three sons, retired army Col. Lawrence A. Singer and his wife, Margaret, of Springfield, Ill., David J. Singer and his wife, Sandra Murray, of Dubois, and Michael R. Singer and his wife, Sherry, of Meridian; a brother, Robert Schwarzmeier and his wife, Ruth Ann, of Palm Bay, Fla.

She has seven grandchildren, Laura Sather of Alpharetta, Ga., retired army Lt. Col. Eric Singer of Yorktown, Va., Lisa Zinchini of Goodlettsville, Tenn., Paul Singer of Woodstock, Ga., Rachael Davis of Tucson, Ariz., Eric Singer of Butler, and Kirsten Singer Ford of Cohoes, N.Y. Seventeen great-grandchildren also survive her.
