Schools prepare for televised academic match

18 teams enter tournament set for April 29

BUTLER — Five high schools in Butler County will compete in the tenth annual Armstrong Academic Challenge on April 29.

The daylong event will take place in the Succop Theater on the campus of Butler County Community College. BC3 is Armstrong's partner in presenting the competition.

The Academic Challenge will be televised live on Armstrong Channel 10 at 9 a.m. The 18-team tournament includes schools from Armstrong's service areas in Western Pennsylvania, according to a news release from Armstrong.

Butler, Freeport, Knoch, Seneca Valley and Moniteau high schools are sending teams to the tournament, which has a question-and-answer format. Grove City High School also is in the contest.

The top four teams will receive school scholarships ranging in amounts from $1,000 to $250. Students on the final four teams will receive U.S. Savings Bonds.

All students in the event will be eligible to apply for two $1,000 Armstrong Academic Challenge scholarships offered through the BC3 Foundation, the news release states.

In addition to live television coverage, the semi-final and final matches will be shown later statewide on the Pennsylvania Cable Network. Matches involving these schools also will be replayed several times on Armstrong Channel 10.

Butler, coached by Herb Thompson, will be represented by Sarah Schubert, Warren Pryde, Sean Gallagher, Kortni Smith and Heather Fagan.

Deborah Kinosz and Mark Wyant are advisers to Freeport's team, which consists of Alexis Parshook, Amy Dean, DJ Lingelbach, Danielle Parjerski, Eric Van Gehuchten and Cody Barker.

Knoch's team is composed of Artie Black, Shane Mills, Whitney Wurmb, Ben Wetzel, Kevin Flaherty and Chris Recio. Kathy Voltz is team adviser.

Jesse Delach, Mark Holfelder, Cody Slater, Ryan Eberlein, Cory Campbell and Devin Ekis will represent Moniteau. Team adviser is Kendra Ameduri.

Seneca Valley team members are Alaina Somers, Steve Balmert, Toni Kasing, Brittany Borghi, Dan Musto and Pete Milo.

For Grove City, team members are Scott Patton, Robert Midberry, Tim Gruber, Pat McFarland, Aaron Keck and Beth Valentine.

Other schools participating are Mercer, Lincoln, Pine-Richland, Maplewood, Mt. Pleasant, Cocoranton, North Allegheny, Connellsville, Conneaut Lake, Commodore Perry, Meadville and Saegertown, according to the news release.

North Allegheny is defending champion.
