Iconic Brooklyn Bridge replica removed from Roebling Park — for now

The Brooklyn Bridge replica in Saxonburg is lifted and moved Friday, April 17. Matthew Brown/Butler Eagle.

A crane lifted the Brooklyn Bridge replica from Saxonburg’s Roebling Park on Friday, April 17, leaving a vacant space next to the Roebling Workshop, where foundation repair will soon be in the works.

The replica, which commemorated the work of John Roebling and his invention of the wire rope that made the real Brooklyn Bridge possible, had to be removed from between the workshop and a park pavilion.

Saxonburg is planning to have the wire rope workshop repaired. Its foundation is sinking into the ground and the whole building is bending under its own weight. The workshop is in the National Registry of Historic Places.

The bridge is being put into storage. However, efforts to pay for its relocation to another part of Roebling Park have been in the works for months already. Save The Bridge — Roebling Park is a fundraising effort by Brooke Wamsley, the granddaughter of one of the replica’s architects, that aims to move it to the other side of the Saxonburg Museum.

To donate to the Save the Bridge project, checks can be made payable to “Save the Bridge,” P.O. Box 149, Saxonburg, PA, 16056. Additionally, there is a Facebook page for the project that includes information about the move and the bridge replica’s history.
