Lap-dog syndrome

Mike Kelly got his wish and helped to pass Trumpcare, the bill that in its current form will kick 24 million Americans out of the health care insurance system so that more tax cuts can go to the wealthiest one percent of taxpayers. Kelly was prominently featured, laughing out loud, in a picture of Republican representatives going to the White House to celebrate their win for those who need it least.

One has to wonder where this lap-dog syndrome will end. So far, only Sen. Bob Casey has been brave enough to speak out against the firing of FBI director James Comey, who was investigating Trump’s collusion with Russia. Russia interfered with our president’s election, according to U.S. intelligence — the only question is what Trump knew and when he knew it.

Casey compared Trump’s actions to those of Richard Nixon during Watergate, when Nixon fired special prosecutor Archibald Cox. Casey called for a special counsel to take over the investigation, since Trump’s choice to lead the FBI might end it.

Kelly’s silence and that of other Republicans on this issue is deafening.

Generally, people seem to believe this kind of stuff doesn’t affect them. But, even if they don’t care about the rule of law, they might want to consider the cuts to Meals on Wheels, Medicaid, Food Stamps and federal employees’ retirement benefits, which are all included in Trump’s budget. Clearly, Republican politicians don’t care about working- or middle-class Americans, but the people of Butler County should.
