Prospect League hires commissionerDennis Bastien has been hired as new commissioner of the Prospect League, the summer collegiate wooden bat circuit that houses the Butler BlueSox.Bastien has 20 years of minor league baseball experience as a franchise owner, operator and general manager. He has served as owner, president and GM of the Charleston Wheelers, a Class A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs and Cincinnati Reds.Bastien succeeds Bryan Wickline, who did not seek a contract extension following his two-year term as Prospect League commissioner.

SRU senior McKay an All-AmericanSLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University senior forward Megan McKay has been named to the 2016 Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-America team.McKay was named second team last year. She scored 11 goals and had four assists this season. The Reading native will leave SRU as the field hockey program's career leader in points (81), goals (33) and assists (15).

Mars grad Castello Freshman of WeekSHIPPENSBURG — For the second time in three weeks, Mars graduate John Castello has been named PSAC East Men's Basketball Freshman of the Week.A forward at Shippensburg University, Castello scored 10 points in the Red Raiders' 87-80 win over No. 12 Indiana (Pa.) and had 11 points and 13 rebounds in his team's 76-69 win over Seton Hill.Shippensburg is off to a 6-0 start for the first time in the program's history.

Yankees retiring Jeter’s No. 2NEW YORK — Derek Jeter’s No. 2 is being retired, the last of the New York Yankees’ single digit uniform numbers.The Yankees said the number will be retired on May 14 before a Mother’s Day game against Houston, and a plaque in Jeter’s honor will be unveiled in Monument Park during the ceremony.Jeter’s number is the 21st retired by the team. He won five World Series titles and was a 14-time All-Star during a 20-season career that ended in 2014. The shortstop ranks sixth in major league history with 3,465 career hits.

Smith 1st woman to win Spink AwardOXON HILL, Md. — Claire Smith became the first woman to win the J.G. Taylor Spink Award for meritorious contributions to baseball writing and will be honored during the Hall of Fame’s induction weekend next July in Cooperstown, N.Y.The 62-year-old Smith covered the New York Yankees for the Hartford Courant for five years starting in 1983 and was a columnist for The New York Times from 1991-98 and The Philadelphia Inquirer from 1998-2007.

Baylor hires Rhule as football coachBaylor hired Matt Rhule as head coach after his highly successful run at Temple, hoping he can rebuild the Big 12 Conference program hit hard by scandal and suddenly struggling on the field.Rhule becomes the full-time replacement for two-time Big 12 champion coach Art Briles.The Bears are 6-6 and headed to the Cactus Bowl despite a six-game skid.
