[naviga:h3]Seahawks, Carroll agree to extension[/naviga:h3]

RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks and coach Pete Carroll have agreed on a contract extension, keeping the oldest head coach in the NFL locked up beyond the 2016 season.

Team owner Paul Allen tweeted confirmation of Carroll’s deal on Tuesday.

The move with the 64-year-old Carroll came just two days after the team locked up general manager John Schneider to a contract extension.

Both Carroll’s and Schneider’s current deals were set to expire after the 2016 season, but the tandem pairing that has brought the Seahawks unrivaled success in their franchise history will be teamed together for another few seasons.

Carroll is 60-36 in the regular season since becoming Seattle’s head coach in 2010. He’s taken the Seahawks to the playoffs in five of six seasons, including two Super Bowl appearances and the only title in franchise history.

[naviga:h3]Browns’ Gordon hurts quadriceps[/naviga:h3]

CLEVELAND — Josh Gordon’s return to football has been sidetracked again.

The oft-suspended Browns wide receiver, who was reinstated on a conditional basis by NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell on Monday, has a quadriceps injury that will keep him out of training camp for at least two weeks.

It’s a new setback for Gordon, who hasn’t played since 2014 and was suspended all of last season for multiple drug violations.

Gordon reported to camp on Tuesday — two days before Cleveland’s veterans were required to arrive — and after he took a physical it was determined he needs time to recover from the injury sustained while working out on his own.

[naviga:h3]Rebuilding Padres trade Upton to Jays[/naviga:h3]

TORONTO — Outfielder Melvin Upton Jr. was already in Toronto with the San Diego Padres when they traded him across the diamond to the Blue Jays.

Joining his new team was a lot more complicated than walking down the hall.

The Blue Jays acquired Upton and cash from the Padres on Tuesday in exchange for minor league right-hander Hansel Rodriguez. They also added reliever Joaquin Benoit from the Mariners for right-hander Drew Storen in a deal announced shortly after a 7-6, 12-inning win over San Diego.

Upton couldn’t join Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins for an early afternoon press conference because he was at the nearest border crossing being cleared to re-enter Canada.

[naviga:h3]Marlins’ Gordon eligible to return[/naviga:h3]

MIAMI — Marlins second baseman Dee Gordon will be eligible for reinstatement from his 80-game suspension on Thursday prior to Miami’s game against St. Louis.

Gordon, last year’s National League batting champ, was suspended for violating the league’s performance enhancing drug policy.

He will be looking to help the Marlins (53-46) make a postseason push although he will not be eligible to participate as part of his violation.

“We’re going to blend him back in for sure,” Marlins manager Don Mattingly said. “We feel like we’re capable of getting into the playoffs and if we get to the playoffs he can’t play so it’s kind of a balancing act of trying to get in and what do you do when you get there?”
