ERIE — Seneca Valley graduate and Penn State Behrend women's soccer forward Alex Bilka scored a goal and added a career-high four assists in a 7-2 win over La Roche Saturday.

Bilka has nine assists on the season, one short of the school record. She also leads the team with seven goals and 23 points.

WACO, Texas — The Slippery Rock University football team went from out of the rankings to No. 20 nationally in this week's American Football Coaches Association Division II national poll.Slippery Rock (5-1) was ranked as high as 14th after beating Millersville 75-0. The Rock fell out of the polls three weeks ago following an upset loss at Seton Hill.

COLUMBIA, S.C. — A person close to the situation says South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier has told his players that he is retiring, effective immediately.The person says the 70-year-old coach told his players Monday night. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because South Carolina has not publicly announced Spurrier's decision.The person says the school has not named an interim coach but likely would announce someone to finish out the season by Wednesday.The Gamecocks are 2-4 and 0-4 in the Southeastern Conference for the first time in Spurrier's 23 seasons coaching in the league at Florida and South Carolina.

LOS ANGELES — Southern California fired Steve Sarkisian, one day after the troubled coach was put on leave.Athletic director Pat Haden made the move one day after determining Sarkisian showed up at school in no condition to lead practice, although Haden refused to reveal specifics about the coach's condition. Offensive coordinator Clay Helton was appointed interim coach Sunday.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. — Florida quarterback Will Grier has been suspended indefinitely for violating the NCAA's policy on banned performance-enhancing drugs.Grier says he took an over-the-counter supplement and Florida plans to appeal the suspension, which is expected to last one year. Coach Jim McElwain says Grier made an honest mistake that could have been prevented by talking to the team's medical staff.Grier was emotional while apologizing for his mistake when he spoke to reporters Monday.

From Carlos Correa to Yoenis Cespedes, baseball's sluggers put on quite a show.There were 21 home runs Monday, a record for one day in postseason play. The last was a three-run shot by Howie Kendrick in the ninth inning for the Los Angeles Dodgers against the Mets.Correa hit two of Houston's four homers against Kansas City, and the Chicago Cubs hit a postseason-record six home runs in their victory.
