SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University sophomore defensive end Marcus Martin has been named PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week.

Martin tallied 11 tackles, 2.5 quarterback sacks, a forced fumble and fumble recovery in SRU's 41-14 win at Gannon.

Martin has 20 sacks in 17 career collegiate games and leads all NCAA players — all divisions – in career sacks per game.

PITTSBURGH — Veteran defenseman Sergei Gonchar's bid to make the Pittsburgh Penguins is over.The team released the 41-year-old Gonchar on Saturday while trimming its roster to 25 players ahead of the season opener next week in Dallas. The four-time All-Star was attempting to make a successful return to Pittsburgh, where he played from 2005-10 while helping the franchise to the 2009 Stanley Cup.While Gonchar is gone, rookie forward Daniel Sprong will stick around. The second-round pick in the June draft had three goals during the preseason. The 18-year-old Sprong can play nine games with the Penguins before his entry-level contract kicks in.Forward Bobby Farnham also survived the final round of cuts.

LOS ANGELES — Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers recorded his 300th strikeout of the season, becoming the first major league pitcher in 13 years to do so.Kershaw had seven strikeouts in 3 2-3 innings Sunday against the San Diego Padres, leaving with a 2-0 lead. He reached the 300-mark with a swinging strikeout of Melvin Upton Jr. to end the third.Kershaw concluded the regular season with 301 strikeouts, joining former Arizona teammates Randy Johnson (2000-02) and Curt Schilling (2002) as the only pitchers since 2000 to record 300.

Ohio State remained No. 1 in The Associated Press college football Top 25 and tied a poll record despite lagging support from the voters.Meanwhile, No. 2 TCU and No. 3 Baylor edged forward, No. 4 Michigan State slipped and No. 5 Utah and No. 6 Clemson took big jumps.After four top-10 teams lost on Saturday, the rankings were rattled and five teams received first-place votes. The Buckeyes received 38 first-place votes, their fewest this season after beginning as the first unanimous preseason No. 1. TCU has five first-place votes, Baylor received 10, Utah has seven and No. 9 Texas A&M has one.

LOS ANGELES — Pat Murphy is out as interim manager of the San Diego Padres.Murphy took over in mid-June after Bud Black was fired. San Diego was 42-53 under Murphy and finished fourth in the division at 74-88 — 23 games behind the Dodgers.
