OXNARD, Calif. — Orlando Scandrick's season is over before it started after the Dallas cornerback tore two ligaments in his right knee in practice at training camp.

A person with knowledge of the injury told The Associated Press that an MRI exam revealed tears to the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament.

Video showed Scandrick's leg bending awkwardly under rookie receiver Lucky Whitehead at the end of a play. Scandrick, who was carted off the field, had recently returned to practice after sitting out with soreness in his left knee.

NEW ORLEANS — Big 12 Conference athletic directors are unanimously backing a proposal that would prohibit schools from accepting transfers who were disciplined for violent acts at their previous schools.In a text to The Associated Press, Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby said that conference ADs meeting in New Orleans “supported a policy draft similar to that of the (Southeastern Conference).” Bowlsby said the draft would still need to be refined and submitted to a joint council of faculty athletic representatives and athletic directors for approval.

PISCATAWAY, N.J. — Rutgers has suspended star receiver Leonte Carroo and quarterback Chris Laviano, along with three other players, for the first half of its season opener against Norfolk State for a curfew violation. Coach Kyle Flood said Laviano, who was competing to be the starting quarterback, tried using a fake ID.The suspension of Laviano means Hayden Rettig will start at quarterback for Rutgers in the season opener on Sept. 5 against Norfolk State. The two have been competing for the top job since the spring.

MINNEAPOLIS — Minnesota has finalized a two-year contract extension for coach Richard Pitino through the 2020-21 season, including a $400,000 raise.The university released the details months after the terms were agreed to while Norwood Teague was the athletic director. Pitino, who finished his second year as coach of the Gophers, will now make $1.6 million annually. His $500,000 base salary stayed the same; his supplemental compensation was bumped up from $700,000 to $1.1 million.

CALGARY, Alberta — The Calgary Flames completed the top task on their summer to-do list by signing captain Mark Giordano to a six-year contract extension.The 31-year-old defenseman still has a year remaining on his deal, but Flames general manager Brad Treliving said in May that re-signing Giordano was his “No. 1 priority” this offseason.The deal is worth $40.5 million.
