Rams hire Weinke as their QB coach

ST. LOUIS — The St. Louis Rams have hired Chris Weinke as quarterbacks coach.

Weinke played seven NFL seasons after winning a Heisman Trophy and leading Florida State to a national championship. He had been director of the IMG Academy program in Bradenton, Florida, helping college prospects including Teddy Bridgewater, Cam Newton and Russell Wilson prepare for the NFL draft.

The Rams also interviewed Jeff Garcia before choosing Weinke, who concluded his playing career in 2007 with the 49ers. He replaces Frank Cignetti, recently promoted to offensive coordinator.

Sandusky’s ex-lawyer charged with theft

CARLISLE, Pa. — An attorney who represented former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky at his sex abuse trial was charged Friday with stealing more than a half-million dollars from clients and spending it on casino gambling and other interests.

Cumberland County detectives filed 25 charges of theft and misappropriation of funds against Karl Rominger, PennLive.com reported.

The 41-year-old stole $535,000 from three clients — a car accident victim, a spouse in a divorce case and the survivors of a woman whose estate Rominger represented, authorities said.

Rominger, who voluntarily surrendered his law license and was disbarred last spring, told PennLive.com that he has not gambled since March.

Sandusky was convicted of sexually abusing 10 boys. He is serving a 30- to 60-year prison term.

NFL considers rule changes

INDIANAPOLIS — Rams coach Jeff Fisher expects the NFL’s competition committee to take another look at expanding replay.

The committee co-chairman said Friday that while many coaches and team officials are proposing changes, including the possibility of making penalties reviewable, they may not happen before next season.

“You have two standards. To me, that’s the biggest concern with it is you have an on-the-field, full-speed, bang-bang call made by the official — we’ll just say pass interference — and then now you’re going to go to replay and you’re going to go frame by frame by frame to determine whether it is or not,” Fisher said. “I’m not so sure that’s where we want to go with our game right now.”

Replay becomes a hot topic each offseason because of the lingering memories of controversial plays.

The two most notable ones this time came in the playoffs: a non-call in the Lions-Cowboys playoff game, and Dez Bryant’s attempt to catch a pass against Green Bay, which was ruled a reception on the field and then overturned.
