Butler group to travel to Tenn. to help last week's storm victims

Jose Cojom shows some of the damage to his home on Wednesday in Putnam County, Tenn. A tornado ripped through his neighborhood before dawn on Tuesday. A group in Butler is collecting supplies to take to people in the affected area.

A Butler group will travel to Tennessee this weekend with supplies in tow to help people affected by last week's tornadoes.

Cindy Parker of Lyndora is collecting supplies this week with the assistance of her community outreach group, Walk in Faith. Having grown up in Tennessee, Parker got in touch with the Global Vision Bible Church in Mount Juliet to coordinate the supplies needed for people recovering.

The National Weather Service said at least six tornadoes hit middle Tennessee during last week's storms, which killed at least 24 people and caused massive damage in parts of Middle Tennessee.

The most deadly of those hit Putnam County, about an hour east of Nashville, where 18 people died and 88 were injured. At least three people died in Wilson County, where Mount Juliet is located.

“There's a lot of people displaced, and they need clothing, hygiene products and other items,” Parker said. “This little community was hit the hardest.”

Parker said many people in Mount Juliet live in mobile homes that have “been totally devastated.”

Parker said her son, 28-year-old Christopher Parker, is leading the initiative. Another son, Andrew Parker, will join them to help reconstruction efforts during their four to five days in Tennessee.

The Parkers continue to seek donations, including baby products, diapers, batteries, survival gear and other items that would be of use as residents recover.

Additionally, the Parkers need a truck large enough to haul all of the items.

Those who want to donate should call Cindy Parker at 724-968-2018.
