Despite vaccinations, COVID-19 takes toll
COVID-19 cases remain high in Pennsylvania, even though 100,000 people are getting vaccinated every day.
The state Department of Health reported Wednesday that 26 new cases in the county raised the total number to 10,410, and 4,602 new cases in the state raised the statewide total to 1,118,470 since the beginning of the pandemic. About 27,327 of the cases in the state are among health care workers.
Butler Memorial Hospital is treating 12 COVID-19 patients, including three in the intensive care unit.
Statewide, 2,833 people are hospitalized, including 576 in intensive care. The 14-day average number of people hospitalized per day is about 3,500 lower than it was at the peak in December 2020 and lower than was at the height of the spring peak in May 2020.
In nursing and personal care homes, 70,293 residents and 14,652 employees have COVID-19. Of the deaths in the state, 13,054 have been residents of nursing or personal care facilities.
One new death in the county brings the total to 401, and 60 new deaths across the state bring the statewide total to 25,827.
The department also said 2,886,162 people are fully vaccinated and an average of 100,000 people are getting vaccinated daily.
A total of 7,409,970 doses have been administered, including 4,793,587 first and single doses and 2,616,383 second doses. In the county, 19,397 people have been partially vaccinated and 57,025 people are fully vaccinated.
BHS said all residents ages 16 and older can sign up for vaccinations, and should do so because the coronavirus continues to spread in the community. Appointments can be scheduled at www.butlerhealthsystem.org.
