South Butler district gets large safety grant

A large state grant will allow the South Butler County School District to improve safety campuswide.

Superintendent David Foley announced that the district was awarded a $405,000 state Department of Education Safety Grant through the state's Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

The grant will be used to replace and expand the current video surveillance coverage throughout the district's kindergarten through 12th grade campus.

The new digital cameras will replace the analog system now in place.

The new cameras will provide high-definition images, which will better enable school police to enforce regulations, investigate violations as they arise, and prosecute when necessary, according to a news release from the district. The grant will also fund other safety enhancements for the campus. Those measures cannot be released publicly for security reasons.

“School safety has been and will continue to be a priority,” Foley said.

All six other districts within the county also received the PCCD grant. They are:

- Seneca Valley $181,000

- Butler Area $45,000

- Mars Area $40,000

- Karns City, Moniteau and Slippery Rock Area $35,000.
