Can't stop this
BUTLER TWP — When guarding Butler, pick your poison.
The result may well be the same.
Chaney coach Marlon McGaughy opted to pay close attention to the Golden Tornado shooters — and senior guard Ethan Morton made the Cowboys pay during Butler's 88-73 home boys basketball victory Saturday night.
“The way we shot the ball Friday night (15 treys), I don't blame them for staying with our shooters,” Butler coach Matt Clement said. “But that did give Ethan more space to work with.”
Morton struck for 33 points, 14 rebounds and eight assists for the Tornado (2-0). Devin Carney contributed 26 points — 18 in the first half — as Butler took a 49-27 lead into halftime.
Morton increased his school-record career point total to 1,723.
The Tornado scored 73 points in the first three quarters. Their lead peaked at 81-53 with 5:22 remaining when Morton went to the bench for good.
Butler opened the game with a 12-0 run. Morton sank a pair of treys and scored 10 of those points, forcing McGaughy to call a timeout less than three minutes into the game.
“That team has shooters and the big kid (Morton) handles the ball well and makes good decisions with the ball,” McGaughy said. “They are a handful to contain, that's for sure.
“We like to get into quick transition, but when you're hitting shots like they were, it's hard to grab (the ball) and go.”
Plenty of players saw plenty of varsity minutes for Butler, particularly in the fourth quarter. Chaney left its starters in the contest and closed the game on a 13-2 run.
“They can score so quickly ... You have to be careful that once they cut it to 12 or 15, they didn't get within six or eight,” Clement said of the lead.
“I had to put Devin back in the game toward the end. That makes me nervous because you fear injury, but he did a good job of running the offense and settling everything down.”
Mason Montag scored seven points in the fourth quarter and Mattix Clement had three assists early in the game.
“A lot of guys got quality minutes against good competition tonight,” Clement said.
Cameron Lawrence paced Chaney — out of Youngstown — with 18 points. Quincy Jones had 15 points and 10 rebounds, Sharrod Taylor 15 points and five boards, William Brown 13 points.
Butler sank 16 of 20 free throws and turned the ball over only three times in the first half.
“These tip-off tournaments don't usually draw a lot of people, but we had good crowds this weekend. It was a good way to start the season,” Clement said.
