Riding for the Cure is marking its fifth year, and Sue Casper wanted the group to do something fun but meaningful to mark that anniversary.

So she suggested the group organize a large number of people to form the shape of the pink ribbon that symbolizes breast cancer awareness.

She and others pulled off that event June 26 when about 110 supporters gathered at an athletic field owned by the Butler School District near Cliff Street.

They aligned the people into the ribbon shape, and Diane Maxwell took photographs above them in an industrial bucket truck.

Casper of West Sunbury said Ride for the Cure will use that photograph to help promote other events and activities of the group.

She got involved with the group because her sister is a 3-year survivor of breast cancer.

Casper said a number of people helped to make that pink ribbon day a success.

Bill Mylan, school district athletic director, helped with the field. Al Vavro, Bruno Zuccala and Jack Ratica organized the ribbon design. Gary Bayer, helped with a drone, and Gary Reddick operated the bucket truck from the Westmoreland Electric Co.

The biggest event for the fundraising group that promotes cancer awareness will be its annual motorcycle ride July 30.

It will start at 9 a.m. at Rock Ann Haven, 141 Greenwood Dr., Butler Township, and end about 5:30 p.m. at the Longhorn Corral, Route 422 west of Butler, with a pig roast.There also will be auctions and raffles and music by Minds-I and Tom Panei.The ride is in honor of Debbi Bell, Breeze Menchyk and Pam Monper and in memory of Kathy Lynn Murphy and Lynne Ann DeFoggi.For information, visit its website at www.ridingforthecurebutler.com.
