A Butler man is accused of sexually assaulting a woman when she was a child from about 1997 to 2005 at two homes, according to charges filed Monday, Sept. 28, by Penn Township police.

Michael Ryan Sparks, 38, was charged with one felony count each of aggravated indecent sexual assault, involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, sexual assault, statutory sexual assault, corruption of minors and another felony offense; and misdemeanor indecent assault following allegations made June 10.

The alleged abuse began in 1997 at a home in Renfrew, police said. Sparks is five years older than the woman.

Police said Sparks began subjecting the woman to pornographic material and threatened to tell an adult if she told anyone. The behavior escalated to Sparks asking to see the woman’s naked body and requesting sexual acts from her.

Sparks was “very persistent,” and incidents continued multiple times over several years at the residence.

In 2004, the abuse occurred at a residence in Butler, police said. The woman was 13 years old at the time, while Sparks was 18 years old.

Police said at the residence, Sparks repeatedly asked her for sexual contact and was told no. The behavior continued until police said the woman was assaulted Dec. 17, 2005.

Sparks’ preliminary hearing has not been scheduled.
