A New Castle man in jail on charges of driving his car into a crowd of people missed his preliminary hearing Wednesday when Butler state police failed to transfer him to the Slippery Rock magistrate.

Joshua M. Klein, 23, was arrested May 18 and arraigned on 15 charges, including four felonies, for allegedly driving under the influence and driving into a crowd of people in Slippery Rock Township. Klein was scheduled to appear Wednesday in court for a preliminary hearing.

His lawyer, Kenneth Harris, appeared frustrated in court after learning that his client hadn't been transported from Lawrence County's jail to the hearing by authorities. Harris declined to comment.

After Klein's arrest, he was placed in the Butler County Prison in May on $15,000 bail, but later that month, according to court records, he was taken to Lawrence County's jail for allegedly breaking his probation in a previous, unrelated case.

Klein's hearing will be rescheduled.
