BUTLER TWP — Two Butler School District employees will get a stipend to fill in for two administrators who resigned earlier this year.

The school board Monday night approved Center Township Elementary School Principal Jeffrey Mathieson as acting elementary coordinator.

The position comes with a stipend of $1,000 per month.

Mathieson will have some of the responsibilities of former assistant superintendent of elementary education Mary Wolf.

Wolf resigned on Feb. 26 and a release agreement was approved by the school board Feb. 27.

Acting Superintendent William Pettigrew, who recommended the move, said Mathieson will help coordinate programs and provide information about elementary education issues to the administration. He will not be supervising other principals or filling other building responsibilities.

The board also approved Lesley Zang, the district’s supervisor of custodians, as temporary supervisor of maintenance, with a stipend of $500 per month.

That move was discussed in executive session at the request of board member Leland Clark, who voted against it.

The maintenance supervisor position was vacated after Glenn Terwilliger put in his resignation last month after being suspended with pay by the board in January.

Zang will report to Assistant Superintendent Brian Slamecka, who has been filling in for Terwilliger.

Terwilliger, Wolf and former superintendent Dr. Dale Lumley, who also resigned in February, were all interviewed as part of the district’s internal investigation into the response to test results last August showing high levels of lead and copper in the water at Summit Township Elementary School.

The district and its employees are also the subject of a criminal investigation and a state Department of Environmental Protection investigation because of the response to the water problems.
