State police is asking targets of a recently uncovered scam to contact investigators with information that can help.

Scammers have been impersonating federal law enforcement to swindle victims out of gold in August and September, according to a Sept. 25 news release.

The fraud scheme typically begins with a pop-up appearing on the computer. Individuals them contact victims, claiming to be federal officials, and claim that victims’ identity or Social Security number has been connected to criminal activity, and that their bank accounts or personal information have been compromised.

Targets are then told to purchase gold bars or coins, and transfer it to a courier for “safekeeping.”

Around $6.5 million has been stole through this scheme, state police said. There may be more victims that have not be identified as of Sept. 25.
