The lawyer for James Copenhaver, one of the men wounded in the shooting at President Donald Trump’s 2024 Butler rally, issued a statement on behalf of Copenhaver’s family following his death.

The statement, issued by attorney Joseph Feldman, said that Copenhaver, a veteran, “devoted husband, father and grandfather,” was surrounded by loved ones when he died. He was 76.

“James's dedication to this great country was a defining part of his life,” the statement said. “As a veteran, he proudly served our nation in the armed forces, and his love of country never wavered. James was a true American patriot who believed deeply in the freedoms and ideals upon which this nation was founded, and he embodied the very best traits of our great nation.”

The statement did not specify the cause of death. He died at Allegheny Health Network’s West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh, according to a statement from the Allegheny County medical examiner.

Copenhaver, of Moon Township, Allegheny County, was one of three civilians shot at the 2024 rally. Former Buffalo Township firefighter Corey Comperatore was fatally shot. Copenhaver and David Dutch, also of Allegheny County, were injured in the assassination attempt.

Copenhaver and David Dutch, along with their wives, have separately sued the U.S. government, saying injuries suffered in the incident are attributable to failures by the U.S. Secret Service.

Copenhaver was shot twice, once in the tricep and once in the abdomen.

“His indelible legacy of love and devotion will forever endure. Our hearts and prayers are with the Copenhaver family, especially his incredible wife Marianne,” Trump said in a Truth Social post Thursday evening.
