Biker injured after hitting deer
A man broke his arm and suffered a bad case of road rash Saturday night after he struck a deer while riding a motorcycle in northern Butler County, authorities said.
The motorcyclist, a man believed to be in his 20s or 30s, was driving south on Route 308 between the state gamelands and Moniteau High School in Cherry Township about 8:30 p.m. when he hit the deer, killing it.
The bike, described as a “crotch rocket,” laid on its side and slid an estimated 300 to 350 feet after hitting the deer, said Joe Fitzgerald, chief of the Marion Township Volunteer Fire Department.
The cyclist, who was wearing a helmet, was able to walk to a nearby home where the resident found him and called 911.
Emergency crews found him lying in the home's yard in moderate pain.
The Slippery Rock Rescue Team tended to the man who was taken by ambulance to Butler Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries.
The motorcycle was totaled, Fitzgerald said.
He said traffic was reduced to one lane for between 30 and 40 minutes following the crash.
State police investigated the wreck, but an accident report was not immediately available.
The West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department assisted at the scene.
