Butler district to get $1.5M
The Butler Area School District will receive about $1.5 million in unpaid reimbursement for renovating Broad Street Elementary School now that the school is reopening.
On Monday, the school board unanimously approved the reimbursement, which will be spread over eight or nine years, through the Pennsylvania Department of Education's PlanCon reimbursement process.
Superintendent Brian White said the reimbursement stopped in July 2015 when the school was closed in a district reorganization plan, but will resume because the board voted to reopen the school.
The district contacted the department in March, just a few days after the board voted to reopen the school, to reactivate the reimbursement of the renovation project that was completed about 10 years ago, White said.
PlanCon reimburses districts a percentage of school project costs.
In unrelated business, the board voted to advertise the sale of the junior high school athletic field off South Cliff Street to consolidate practices at the intermediate and high school fields.
Board members said the field is used for soccer practice, but it is not located at the intermediate/senior high school complex, and parents and district officials want to have all practices at the school fields.
White said a few potential buyers have approached the district about the property.
In other business, the board agreed to hire Eckles Construction Services of New Castle at a cost not to exceed $293,000 to manage an upcoming construction project at the high school.
The project includes construction of an auxiliary gym and some new classrooms. Bids for the project are due and will be opened May 6.
The board also agreed to waive all fees for students in grades seven through 12 who failed math, English, science or social studies to enroll in academic recovery summer school classes this summer. The classes normally cost $100 for a three-week course and $200 for a six-week course.
