Woman accused of spitting on officer

Butler police arrested a city woman they said spit on an officer after she assaulted her mother Monday night.

Sophia Rose Locke, 29, is charged with felony and misdemeanor assault in the incident, which began with a call around 10 p.m. for a reported domestic fight at her home on the 200 block of Mercer Street, police said.

The alleged victim in the domestic, Locke's mother, told police that the defendant threw her to the ground, according to charging documents. The victim suffered unspecified injuries to her knee and elbow.

Police said they arrested Locke. While placing her in the back of a patrol car, she is accused of spitting on Patrolman Andrew Niederlander.

The actions, documents stated, put the officer “in fear, knowing the diseases that could be transmitted through saliva.”

District Judge William Fullerton arraigned Locke on a felony charge of aggravated assault of a police officer and a misdemeanor charge of simple assault for the alleged incident of domestic violence.

Locke is free on $5,000 bail with the condition that she have no contact with her mother. Her preliminary hearing is scheduled for March 23 at the office of District Judge Sue Haggerty in Saxonburg.

Online court records did not list an attorney for Locke, and she could not be reached for comment.
