Police allegedly found marijuana in a bag labeled “skunk sack” stashed in the car of a New Castle man pulled over for speeding this spring.

Police charged 37-year-old Michael J. Kokolis on Monday with two counts of driving under the influence, possessing a small amount of marijuana for personal use, two counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, speeding and careless driving. Kokolis was stopped April 30 after police reported him going 86 mph near the 98-mile marker of Interstate 79, where the speed limit is 70 mph.

When police stopped Kokolis, they allegedly noted the odor of marijuana coming from inside the car. According to court documents, Kokolis allegedly told police he smoked marijuana the day before and told officers he had a bag with the drug in it.

Police report Kokolis failed several field sobriety tests, leading investigators to search his car, where they found a black plastic bag with the words “skunk sack” on it. Authorities estimate Kokolis had 8 grams of marijuana in the bag, along with wooden and glass pipes containing what they believe was marijuana residue, according to charging documents.

Investigators also reported observing that Kokolis was “generally talkative and questioning.” They conducted a field test of the substance and concluded it was marijuana.

Kokolis was arrested and taken to Butler Memorial Hospital for a drug test, which later confirmed the presence of THC in his bloodstream.

Kokolis is awaiting a preliminary hearing.
