A man is accused of driving drunk last month when he crashed his pickup into the steps of a building in Butler, injuring a passenger — his 8-year-old son.

Shawn M. Lacamera, 31, of Butler, is to be arraigned Monday on charges of driving under the influence, child endangerment, driving with a suspended license and two other traffic violations.

City police said they were called just before 4 p.m. June 16 for a report that a pickup had struck the Cunningham Shanor apartment building on West New Castle Street.

Officers got there and found Lacamera's truck resting against the concrete steps on the McGeary Street side of the building.

His son, who had been riding in the pickup, was in the back of an ambulance being treated by medics. Police Sgt. Jeremy Walters, the investigating officer, said it appeared the boy had minor injuries, including a bruise on his forehead.

Police spoke to two motorists, who described seeing the truck turn recklessly onto McGeary Street from the westbound lane on West New Castle Street moments before the crash, according to charging documents.

One of the motorists, who was eastbound on West New Castle Street, told police that Lacamera had nearly caused a collision with her vehicle.

The defendant smelled of alcohol, police said, and officers noticed an open can of spiked punch malt beverage in the pickup.

Lacamera admitted that he had two cans of the beverage before driving, documents said.

He allegedly showed impairment during field sobriety testing, and police took him to the station for a breath test that indicated his blood-alcohol level was 0.15 percent. A level of 0.08 percent is considered intoxicated under state law.
