Power outage affects elementary school

CENTER TWP — Center Township Elementary School lost partial power late Thursday morning, forcing the school to relocate its students.

The district moved students from the school to the Butler Intermediate High School.

District officials said without full power, the school would be unable to provide lunch to students and maintain heat throughout the day.

Students ate lunch at the intermediate school and participated in various activities throughout the day.

At the end of the day, the district dismissed bus students directly from the intermediate school.

The district took students who already were scheduled for parent pick up back to the elementary school for dismissal.

Gifted students who were at Center Township Elementary School for the day from other elementary schools were sent back to their home schools.

Parents were allowed to pick up their children early from school.

Butler Superintendent Brian White Jr. said the school should go back to business Friday.

“Yes, power has been restored,” White said. “Center Township will be operating on a normal schedule tomorrow.”

Center Township school's partial outage was one of a few outages Thursday.

“It was very windy this morning,” said Todd Meyers, a spokesman for West Penn Power.

Meyers said crews responded to the school's outage around 9:30 a.m. He said crews believed a tree limb fell onto a wire near Lakeview Drive, causing about 13 customers in the area to lose power, including the school.

Meyers said the line was re-energized around 11:39 a.m.

Meyers said the power company anticipated being outage prone Thursday.

“We've been busy all day,” he said. “When you have snow and you have wind, that's just a recipe for problems on the lines.”
