A freshman at Knoch High School was one of five winners of the August Wilson essay contest.

Dillon Schwertz of Renfrew won $1,000 at ceremonies in Pittsburgh May 17. The contest was sponsored by August Wilson Center for African American Culture.Students in Allegheny, Beaver, Butler, Washington and Westmoreland counties were asked to write their own stories of how they overcame challenges in their lives.———

Megan Gibson, daughter of David and Paula Gibson of Mars, has been accepted to Mount St. Mary's University for the August session.A senior at Mars High School, she was recently awarded the 2007 Jeff Danner Memorial Scholarship.Gibson plans to major in International business.———

Juliann Hughey has earned a Founders' Award to attend Mount Union College, where she plans to study German education.The daughter of Chuck and Darlene Hughey, she is a recent graduate of Mars High School, where she was a member of the National Honor Society, German Club and the Women's Ensemble.———

The Penn Glade Lions Club has named the winners of its drug awareness poster contest.First place went to Casey Magdinec. Second and third place went to Elijah Gengler and Randy Hoffman, respectively. All are students at Mars Elementary School.Each winner received a steak dinner.Magdinec and Gengler also received honorable mentions in the district contest, which included entries from five counties.———

Brittney Miller of Portersville, daughter of Scotty and Lucy Miller, has been accepted to the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg, where she plans to study biology and pre-medicine.A recent graduate of Slippery Rock High School, she was a member of the soccer and volleyball teams, the Harry Potter Club and was named on the high honor and honor rolls.———

Michael Morgano, a recent graduate of Moniteau High School, has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Waste Management, through the Big 33 Scholarship Foundation.Morgano was chosen as a scholarship recipient for academic excellence and commitment to extra-curricular activities. He plans to attend Butler County Community College.
