Nicole Martin, a junior at Slippery Rock High School, has been granted a full scholarship to attend Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week 2007 at Lycoming College in William-sport.She will attend week one of the four, one-week sessions that offer students an inside look into the private enterprise and free market systems.She is the daughter of Laura Cala of Portersville.———The

Butler Elks Lodge 170 has announced the winners of its Americanism Essay Contest.In the fifth grade category, first place went to

Emily Barber, a student at Center Township Elementary School.

Alexis Frenchak, also a student at Center Township Elementary, won second place.

Molly Gomez, a sixth grade student at Center Township Elementary, won first place in her age category in the local contest and also placed first in the state level competition. Her essay will be sent to the National Contest for further judging. Second place in the local competition for sixth grade students went to

John Evankovich of Karns City received the Archbishop John Mark Gannon Award for graduating from Gannon University with a 4.0 grade point average.He graduated in May with a bachelor's degree in biotechnology and will continue his education at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.The son of John Evankovich and Susan Strobel, he is a Karns City High School graduate and was a member of the Gannon University Honors Program and the Tri-Beta honor society.———

Heather Hanrahan, a Grove City High School student, has been named a United States National Award Winner in foreign language.She is the daughter of Mike and Mindy Hanrahan of Grove City.———

Kristin Klein, a junior at Butler Senior High School, was selected by the Butler American Legion Auxiliary Unit 117 to attend Keystone Girls State.This "Experience inGovernment" was held at Shippensburg University June 17 through June 23 and involved 200 participants learning about city, county and state government.Klein teaches horseback riding and is active in the 4H Club and the vice president of the Youth Council of Butler County. She also belongs to the Butler Senior High School writing club and ski club.She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James Klein of Butler.———

Kaitlin Werling, a junior at Knoch High School, was selected by Don Steffan of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 778 to attend Keystone Girls State.This "Experience in Government" was held at Shippensburg University June 17 through June 23 and involved 200 participants learning about city, county and state government.Werling is active in the Future Business Leaders of America, Youth and Government, Knox lacrosse and the American Legion Woman's Auxiliary.She is the daughter of Doran Werling of Penn Township in Butler.———

Isabelle Opsitos, a fifth grade student in the Pennsylvania Virtual Charter School, participated in the Harry Potter's Science Adventure C-MITES summer program.The program, a part of the Carnegie Mellon Institute for Talented Elementary and Secondary Students, was held at Edgewood Elementary school June 18 through June 29.She is the daughter of Matthew and Kimberly Opsitos of Cranberry Township.———

Caleb Dodd, son of David and Josie Dodd of Worthington was recently inducted into the Rho Chi national pharmacy honor society recently at Northeastern University.Astudent in Northeastern's PharmD program, Dodd was one of 30 students inducted from the Class of 2009.———The

Butler County Fire Chiefs Association has announced the winners of its annual scholarships.Recipients include
