Westminster College senior and Spanish major

Erin Tarpey has been accepted to study at Las Veritas University in Costa Rica for the fall semester. She is the is a daughter of Robert and Christine Tarpey of Cranberry Township and a graduate of Seneca Valley High School.———

Allison Buzzelli, a 2008 Westminster College graduate, was one of nine students awarded a Samuel Robinson Scholarship by the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).Buzzelli, a Spanish major and Young Presbyterian Scholars student, is a daughter of Robin and Phillip Buzzelli of Grove City and a graduate of Grove City High School. She belongs to Tower Presbyterian Church, Grove City.Awards were based on answers to questions and submitted essays.———

Zachary Mayes, son of Ted and Cheryll Cranmer of Butler and Steve Mayes of Cranberry Township, earned a 2008 Presidential Award for Excellence in Scholarship and was named on the dean's list for the 2007 fall and 2008 spring semesters at West Virginia University. The chemical engineering major also has been selected to the Gold Cheerleading Squad.———Slippery Rock Univeristy student

Michael Vavro has been accepted to the Cultural Studies Academy in the European summer study program in Salzburg, Austria. The appointment was based on references and academic achievement. He is the son of Phil and Karen Vavro of Butler.———

Scott Vascik of Sarver was among 12 graduates to receive an Archbishop John Mark Gannon Award at recent commencement ceremonies at Gannon University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in biology. The award is based on grade-point average. Vascik is the son of Art and Kathy Bascik.———Butler High School students

Maura Keasey and

Miles Kaltenbach recently received 2008 Rosanne Cavalero and Jane Cavalero Scholarships in the amount of $7,941. The scholarships go to students with the highest grade-point averages pursuing post-secondary education.Keasey is the daughter of Ashley and RoseMary Keasey of Butler. She will major in elementary education at Penn State University.Kaltenbach is the son of Gerald and Ursula Kaltenbach of Butler. He will major in chemistry at Duquesne University.———Two students in the Mars School District won first place awards June 14 in the 15th Western Pennsylvania Chess Tournament at Carnegie Mellon University.

Ashwin Anbur won the kindergarten through grade five championship section.

Kyle Deddo took first place in the grade six through grade 12 advanced section.———

Zachary Rosswog of Mars has received The American Concrete Institute Award recognizing an undergraduate student for outstanding mastery of the design and analysis of reinforced concrete structures.He is the son of Peter and Alexis Rosswog and attended Mars High School.
