Ian Brown was one of 10 awarded a college scholarship by the Pittsburgh Pirates.The scholarship of $2,500 was sponsored through a partnership with the Pennsylvania Treasury Department, which administers nowU, Pennsylvania's college savings program.The contest launched July 24 and ran through Sept. 19.Winners were chosen at random and invited to a Pittsburgh Pirates game, where they were presented with their scholarship on the field prior to the start of the game.———Four Butler High School seniors were named Commended Students in this year's National Merit Scholarship program.These students qualified by taking the Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test as juniors.

Benjamin L. Smith will receive a Letter of Commendation in recognition of their accomplishments.———

Kyle Connell of Cranberry Township recently received the John P. Deehan textbook prize of $300 from the Stillman School of Business at Seton Hall University. Connell is a sophomore accounting student at the Stillman School.———

Logan Gamelier of Cranberry Township has been accepted for admission to St. Vincent College for the fall 2008 semester. Gamelier is the daughter of Paul and Liz Gamelier and a Seneca Valley High School graduate.———Local Westminster College students

Megan Hoffman participated in groups that produced documentaries that won awards in The Christophers' 21st annual video contest for college students.The Christophers, a Christian inspirational group, asked entrants to create a short film, narrative or documentary, on the theme "One Person Can Make a Difference."Westminster students Gary DeBaldo, Kristin Nikolaison, Shauna Oles, Nicky Piszczor, and Amy Schillinger shared the $2,000 second place award for "Lead, Live, Learn: Miss Vonnie's Vision." The documentary chronicles the story of Walker House, an after-school program founded by Yvonne "Miss Vonnie" Clark to reach out to inner-city children.Westminster students Amy Cornicelli, Megan Hoffman, Shayna Marti, Ashley Santarsiero, and Jamie Spisak earned a $100 honorable mention for "What One Woman Can Do Is"The film describes the contributions of Barb Wagner, director of the Eastside Breakfast Food Pantry, who is responsible for feeding more than 120 families in the New Castle area each month.DeBaldo is a son of James and Pamela DeBaldo of Gibsonia. Hoffman is a daughter of Gloria Hoffman of Butler.
