JACKSON TWP — About $3 million in state funds will be used to improve three intersections on or near Route 19 in the northern part of the township.

Intersections to be improved with traffic controls and signals in 2017 are Route 19 and Little Creek Road; Little Creek Road and Mercer Road; and Route 19, Fanker Road, Wise Road and Mennonite Lane.

The latter will have a five-way traffic signal. Township officials said this is because of ambulances exiting the Harmony EMS station on Mennonite Lane.

Fanker Road, which was improved and moved last year due to an aging culvert, now is aligned directly across from Wise Road.

The township supervisors, who heard about the work at their meeting Thursday night, said the intersection at Little Creek Road and Mercer Road is “one of the most dangerous” in the township.

“It’s impatience,” Supervisor Ron Lutz said about why motorists crash there. “It’s always about impatience.”

The supervisors said they do not know what kind of traffic improvement will go at the intersection at Little Creek Road and Mercer Road.

“It could be a traffic light or it could be a roundabout. Time will tell,” Supervisor Ron Lutz said. “It hasn’t come before us. It’s up to the developer and the state Department of Transportation.”

The money is awarded to Jackson Towne Centre, a development agency owned by Don Rodgers.

Township manager Chris Rearick said the township will be recipient of the funds while Jackson Towne Centre will provide matching funds.

“PennDOT requires a public entity to be part of that agreement,” he said of the township receiving funds. “Our role is very minimal.”

Rearick also said Jackson Towne Centre is contracting with PennDOT for the local project.

Rodgers could not be reached for comment this morning.

A traffic study by PennDOT for this intersection work was approved this summer.

Route 19 at Route 528 in the southern section of the township also has had significant upgrades in recent years.

New traffic lights were installed on Route 19 at its intersection with Jackson’s Pointe Court in 2014 and Zehner School Road in 2015.

A new intersection was also constructed this year at Route 528, Tomlinson Road and Jo Deener Drive.
