SEVEN FIELDS — An elderly woman Tuesday was able to walk away with only a minor injury after she allegedly backed her car into the Giant Eagle.

The driver, a Cranberry Township resident, may have mistaken the gas pedal for the brake pedal when she was backing out of her parking spot just after 2 p.m., said Tim Llewellyn, assistant fire chief with the Adams Area Fire District.

Cranberry EMS treated her at the scene for a minor leg wound, but she refused transport for further treatment, he said.

Her Chevrolet Blazer SUV was damaged, but drivable.

No one else was hurt, but one witness said a man exiting the liquor store was nearly hit as the car accelerated backward.

“There was a guy standing right here and she almost hit him,” said Ben Snell of Seven Fields, who was outside the store when it happened.

The car squealed its tires when it quickly backed up.

“She was lucky; it could have been way worse,” Snell said.

The car backed into a pillar, hit some shopping carts and damaged the door that leads to the grocery store’s cafe area. The store roped off the door, but business was otherwise unaffected.

The Evans City-Seven Fields Regional Police are investigating the incident.
