Clearfield Twp. man, 72, dies in fall off roof

A 72-year-old man died Friday afternoon after falling from the roof of a home in Clearfield Township, authorities said.

The accident happened about 2:30 p.m. as the man was taking measurements to replace a broken window at the small, two-story house on Clearfield Road where he was born and raised, according to investigators.

The home is vacant, and the man lives with his wife in a house behind it, authorities said.

State police investigated the incident but a report, including the man's name, was not immediately released.

Butler County Deputy Coroner Larry Barr pronounced the man dead at the scene shortly after 3 p.m. There was no autopsy performed, and the cause of death was listed as blunt force trauma to the head. The manner of death was accidental.

The man had used a ladder to climb onto the metal roof of a porch to measure a window that he noticed had been broken. His wife was on the ground.

“He was yelling measurements to her,” Barr said.

He apparently turned around and possibly slipped on the roof. Barr noted the man was wearing work boots, and it was windy when the accident occurred.

Barr said the man fell 10 to 12 feet and died on impact. “It was a freak accident,” the deputy coroner said.
