Car slams into back of snow plow truck
CLAY TWP — A Boyers woman escaped serious injury this morning but her car was totaled when it slammed into the back of a snow plow truck and burst into flames, authorities said.
The collision about 6:50 a.m. spilled about two tons of salt and anti-skid material onto Route 308 and closed a portion of the road for more than 90 minutes.
The car was destroyed and the PennDOT plow truck was damaged, said Chief Reid Campbell of the West Sunbury Volunteer Fire Department.
State police are investigating the wreck but an accident report was not immediately available.
Campbell said the truck was on plow duty when the driver stopped in the southbound lane on Route 308, about one-half mile north of West Sunbury.
The driver apparently stopped to raise the truck bed and shift the load of salt and anti-skid to the rear of the vehicle.
The woman in the car traveling south rear-ended the truck, which had its hazard lights on, Campbell said.
“She said she didn’t know the truck was stopped,” Campbell said.
The engine and front passenger compartments caught fire after the collision.
The woman, who suffered minor injuries in the crash, managed to get out on her own. Her car’s air bags deployed, authorities said.
A medical crew treated her at the scene. The woman’s mother later arrived and took her to an unknown hospital for further treatment.
West Sunbury firefighters got to the scene and had to put out the fire coming from the car.
“The car is a total loss from the wreck and the fire,” Campbell said.
The truck driver was not hurt. The salt spreader in back, however, was damaged.
Traffic was reduced to a single lane to allow crews to clean up the wreckage and for PennDOT to rescue the spilled salt and anti-skid from the road.
