Woman receives up to 3 years in prison
A Butler woman who stole thousands of dollars from a tobacco shop where she worked will spend up to three years in state prison.
According to court records, 27-year-old Jamie M. Ruggles was on court supervision for a cocaine-related case when she stole from her new employer, 3B’s Tobacco in the Point Plaza shopping plaza.
According to court records, Ruggles only worked at the store for two months last summer when her employer noticed a discrepancy. A check with the receipts from Ruggles’ cash register and in-store surveillance tape showed Ruggles canceled merchandise sales after ringing them in at the cash register and then kept the money for her personal use.
Within two days, Ruggles canceled 120 transactions and kept $3,781 from the store, according to court records.
She pleaded guilty to a felony count of theft and was sentenced Thursday by Butler County Judge William Shaffer. In addition to serving 15 to 36 months in state prison, Ruggles was ordered to pay restitution to the store.
The length of her sentence includes consideration that Ruggles violated the terms of the county’s Intermediate Punishment Program with the new crime.
Court records say she was sentenced to serve five years in the program following a conviction of possession with intent to deliver cocaine in 2006.
Ruggles’ criminal record also includes previous convictions for theft and possession of drug paraphernalia.
