Gardasil & the Religious Right

ameshaa@aol.com

Dee writes that she, in agreement with the Religious Right, is advocating for a society "that eliminates the need for vaccines" in her opposition to the vaccine against HPV. What Dee fails to account for is that not everyone subscribes to that Puritanical view of society (thankfully) and should not be chastised for supporting a vaccine that will indisputably reduce the incidence of cervical cancer (and genital warts). Republican Governor Perry, in explaining his decision to mandate the vaccine in public schools, stated "I can't look a young lady in the eye and tell her that I had the ability to prevent a cancer that's going to kill her and I didn't do it." That is the benefit Gardasil offers and solely because the virus the vaccine protects against is sexually transmitted, the Religious Right is willing to forgo the benefits to adhere to their "abstinence only" dogma. Lastly, the fiscal burden of state Medicaid funding for cervical cancer treatment is much more expensive than the funding needed for implementation of Gardasil in public schools.

Tom from North Carolina writes that those that oppose the Religious Right are akin to the ruling faction (The Party) in the novel *1984* who decry a person who opposes them (Emmanuel Goldstein) and dedicate "2 minutes of hate" towards him each day. The Religious Right's machinations for theocracy are more similar to the actions of the Party, and those that are fighting to return this nation to its secular roots are more like The Brotherhood (Goldstein's group) who are fighting for their very survival in the midst of a world-wide resurgence of religious theocracy. Tom's analogy is the exact opposite of the truth.
